The very bad epd figures on Braberg reflect an issue that has plagued the ASA for quite a number of years. When Angus genetics have been incorporated into the ASA system, the epd figures have been incorporated at par from the Angus system. When a fullIblood bull is imported, there aren’t any figures that the ASA has deemed sufficient to provide an appropriate beginning point. So, it appears that imported fullblood animals start out at zero which results in a very inaccurate epd computation. The very low and missing epd figures are certainly not an indication of what we expect Brandberg to produce.
Tested to be an homozygous non-dulitor.
YCR456U Polled/s Full Fleckvieh Fullblood bull. He has loose scabs for scurrs. This is an outcross breeding for our herd. A search of the ASA for progeny today does not list anything except those registered to YCR. This bull is a slight line breeding on Balist. We have two polled females sired by Brandberg that we are considering using as donors assuming that their first calf supports the decision. Braberg’s dam is a moderate sized female that has consistently produced outstanding offspring including two other bulls that were solid colored on the body with just a bit of white on the forehead.
We test bred Braberg in the spring of 2009, principally to females sired by Natural with the purpose of picking up some head pigmentation. Our continued use of Braberg will be based upon an evaluation of his first calf crop.
